A five-transgene cassette confers broad-spectrum resistance to a fungal rust pathogen in wheat

چکیده
Breeding wheat with durable resistance to the fungal pathogen Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici (Pgt), a major threat cereal production, is challenging due rapid evolution of virulence. Increased durability and broad-spectrum can be achieved by introducing more than one gene, but combining numerous unlinked genes breeding laborious. Here we generate polygenic Pgt transgene cassette five into bread as single locus show that at least four are functional. These lines resistant aggressive highly virulent isolates from around world very high levels in field. The simple monogenic inheritance this multigene greatly simplifies its use breeding. However, new isolate virulence several suggests gene stacks will need strategic deployment maintain their effectiveness. Combining fungal-resistance enables generation lines.

Overexpression of NPR1 in Brassica juncea Confers Broad Spectrum Resistance to Fungal Pathogens
Brassica juncea (Indian mustard) is a commercially important oil seed crop, which is highly affected by many biotic stresses. Among them, Alternaria leaf blight and powdery mildew are the most devastating diseases leading to huge yield losses in B. juncea around the world. In this regard, genetic engineering is a promising tool that may possibly allow us to enhance the B. juncea disease resista...

Common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is one of the most important cereal crops. Wheat powdery mildew caused by Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici (Bgt) is a continuing threat to wheat production. The Pm21 gene, originating from Dasypyrum villosum, confers high resistance to all known Bgt races and has been widely applied in wheat breeding in China. In this research, we identify Pm21 as a typical c...
متن کاملThe expression of a bean PGIP in transgenic wheat confers increased resistance to the fungal pathogen Bipolaris sorokiniana.
A possible strategy to control plant pathogens is the improvement of natural plant defense mechanisms against the tools that pathogens commonly use to penetrate and colonize the host tissue. One of these mechanisms is represented by the host plant's ability to inhibit the pathogen's capacity to degrade plant cell wall polysaccharides. Polygalacturonase-inhibiting proteins (PGIP) are plant defen...
متن کاملThe wheat Lr34 multipathogen resistance gene confers resistance to anthracnose and rust in sorghum
The ability of the wheat Lr34 multipathogen resistance gene (Lr34res) to function across a wide taxonomic boundary was investigated in transgenic Sorghum bicolor. Increased resistance to sorghum rust and anthracnose disease symptoms following infection with the biotrophic pathogen Puccinia purpurea and the hemibiotroph Colletotrichum sublineolum, respectively, occurred in transgenic plants expr...
متن کاملA kinase-START gene confers temperature-dependent resistance to wheat stripe rust.
Stripe rust is a devastating fungal disease that afflicts wheat in many regions of the world. New races of Puccinia striiformis, the pathogen responsible for this disease, have overcome most of the known race-specific resistance genes. We report the map-based cloning of the gene Yr36 (WKS1), which confers resistance to a broad spectrum of stripe rust races at relatively high temperatures (25 de...
